Auction N°1 of “Le Timbre Classique” in Geneva, Switzerland : A solid demand for quality classic stamps and covers.

A strong presence on the Internet with many clients bidding live as if they were in the room, combined with phone and room bidding, secured top prices for classic stamps and covers. The highlights of this sale included the Swiss “Registered Mail” exhibition collection setting overall high prices, proving how elusive registered covers are from this period. The star item of the collection, a front of cover with a Zurich 6Rp cantonal stamp fetched 14’640CHF, results of other classics include a Basel Dove with a scarce grill cancel fetching 11’590CHF, and a nice Basel Dove on cover got 29’280CHF. The section of Russia, including a beautiful section of Zemstvos, enabled the specialists to find almost every area of interest in this field. The Afghanistan section had each one of its lots sold with sometimes fierce bidding with for example a 1872-73 1 Rupee reddish purple fetching 3’660CHF against a catalogue value of only 2’000 euros. The hardest fight was without doubt in the China section with an archive of Red-Band covers addressed to Haiphong in Tonkin, offering many elusive cancels on often registered covers. A 1916 registered cover with a “letter-box” cancel, unrecorded by Padget, started at 500CHF and realised 8’540CHF. The collection sale at 14h00 on Thursday was eagerly expected and fierce bidding brought top market prices with some collections reaching ten times their original estimates.  Le Timbre Classique is already receiving new consignments for their 2021 auctions and those who wish to part in their success can contact Anders Thorell by sending an email at : info@letimbreclassique.com.
